New Email server for email addresses at thevine.net
If you are having trouble getting or sending email since the new server, we have found these 3 reasons/fixes.
1. Make sure your setting for the account name (or email user ID) is your whole email address, not just the first part, for example, if your email address is "myaddress@thevine.net" your email software's setting for your account name should be "myaddress@thevine.net" and not just "myaddress". (This is the number 1 reported fix.)
2. Passwords are now case sensitive, new servers are not as lax as old email servers. So if you know your password has mixed case, make sure you're using the case.
3. This has only to do with users that have Eudora, for some reason after you make the change for the pop3 server to "pop3.thevine.net" Eudora may pass a bad password. So you have to retype your password into Eudora, do so by selecting "Special/Forget Password" from the dropdown menu in Eudora. Then the next time you check Eudora will prompt for your password, you can reenter it.

NOTICE:
We are changing our dialup numbers within Santa Clarita Valley in order to improve our service.
Starting May 1st, if your computer is using the phone numbers 260-2865 or 284-1905, please start using 210-2561 (our new local Santa Clarita dialup number).
In addition to changing the number, please make sure that your Logon ID includes @thevine.net, like your email address, i.e. "[your logon id]@thevine.net".
The old numbers will be continue to be available through May 21st. This Only affects you if your computer dials 260-2865 or 284-1905 to get online. If it uses any other number there is nothing for you to change.
If you have any problems or questions please email us at staff@thevine.net or call us at 661-260-2882.
The added benifits to this change is that you will now be able to connect to the Internet from many locations throughout the United States. To find National numbers available, go to http://www.thevine.net/asp/national.

If you recieve an error that you are not allowed to relay it is because your email software is not configured to send with SMTP Authentication. On Monday September 27th we upgraded our mail server software. This upgrade is enforcing rules for SMTP Authentication that only Netscape Mail does not properly configure by default.

While testing the lines came back up, so we are unsure where the problem may be, tonight (Saturday) after 10pm the upstream provider will do some detailed tests which will bring the line down for 10-15 minutes.

On Monday July 5th, we are scheduling to upgrade our web server, the work will be done between noon and 5pm (hopefully not later.) As of this time, the phone company has 75% of our lines working. This will reduce busy signals but there will still be some. Hopefully they will have them all fixed soon.

We have been told that the problem is being currently worked on and should be fixed soon. So hopefully by tonight.
Update:
As of 5pm on May 5th, there is a problem with the dialup lines and the phone company will probably not be able to fix this problem tonight. This will result in busy signals.
The phone company has made a mistake with our lines again, making half of our lines inoperable. We are on the one working with them on this issue and hope to have it resolved soon.

A new Email-Virus was found today. We have just recieved the update on our mail server to stop it, however it wasn't discovered very soon so to be safe you should update your anti-virus software.
Also as a rule, NEVER open an email attachement that comes to you from somebody you don't know. It's not worth the risk.

There is a problem with dialup numbers outside of Santa Clarita. Apparently, a network outage is not allowing authentication requests to complete so dialup access is not working properly. Although there is no ETA at this time, the problem is being aggressively addressed. As soon as the problem is found I'm sure it will be resolved quickly.
This does not effect anything inside of Santa Clarita, if you dial into 284-1905 or 284-1615 there are no problems.

We have been experieincing some techincal problems with our mail server starting last night around 11pm (Aug, 25) I have spent most of the night running checks on the server. This has caused some downtime to send/recieve email and some inability to logon (authentication failures) through dialup. It's 320am and I've finished for now, hopefully it has resolved the problem.

Updated: 10:10am currently the upstream network is up, however this is on a temporary router, Sprint is replacing the temporary router in the next couple of hours, this will mean downtime but should be short.
There is a known problem with the upstream internet provider (Sprint).
There is a physical problem with one of their routers, they are working on it and hope to have it fixed soon. The problem started about 7am.

Our mail server data has failed we are restoring from backup. During this time you will not be able to check or send mail. It takes about 2 hours for this operation to complete. All other aspects of the internet are availible.

Last night (03/12) and today/tonight (03/13) we had busy signals and some disconnects. Unfortunatly it was something we had to do to identify the malfunctioning equipment. We are confident that we have found it and have replacements coming.

We have isolated a problem with a modem group. We are waiting for equipment to arrive. When it does there will be some minor downtime, this will be next week Monday or Tuesday.
There should be no work over the weekend, unless there is an emergency.

As many of you know, our mail server has been having some serious problems. Today was no exception, unfortunatly.
We are however, building a brand new mail server that will go into production sometime tomorrow morning. Going into production should have minimal downtime (10-15 minutes).

We do have another service that we were changing to and it is now fully active. However, this service requires authentication by your news reader. Nearly all newsreaders support authentication. For authentication use YourDialupLogonID@thevine.net (ie staff@thevine.net) and your dialup password.

We have been under a heavy spam attack since Saturday afternoon. This is a distributed type attack (coming from multiple locations on the net) so it is much more difficult to control. The server is working hard to process all email and has been keeping up.
The only problem you would have noticed was a short downtime sending mail this morning (01/21/02), some email sent between 1030am-1130am had an approximate 3 hour delay, there were 12 messages that had erroneous virus detections (ie they didn't have viruses but the over sensitive server thought they did) and finally there was an approximate 4 hour window when email was _not_ scanned for viruses.
Otherwise, there has been no loss of email and we will monitor the server closely over the next couple of days.

This has no effect on the majority of members. It does give those that are behind firewalls access.

Today between the hours of 8:30am and approximately 2:30pm our web server was the target of an organized malicious hack attack along with numerous other web servers on the Internet. During that period our server was on and off. Since the attack did minimal damage to the files there were only some potential losses. If you uploaded files during that period to our web server then you should check that they are still there.
This had little effect on your browsing/using the Internet and no effect on email. This would only affect you if you have a web site published on our server. And only if you uploaded files during the time described above.
We have installed a fix for the hack and should no longer have problems with it.

Our email server is very busy filter out the new AnnaKournikova.jpg.vbs VBS/SST virus. As reported by news.com it is one of the fastest spreading viruses.
You should not feel any impact, you may get notified by our virus filtering software if you are a recipient of the virus. Since the virus sends it's self you can ignore the message and know that it has been blocked from your email.

Pac Bell is currently on site and working on the phone line problem. This _should not_ effect you in any way although there may be temporary disconnections.
We have had complaints that users can not get to Microsoft's web site (and a number of sites owned by Microsoft.) This has _nothing_ to do with our phone line problem. This has to do with an issue on Microsoft's end. For more information click here.

At about 1:10 pm a semi-truck hit a power pole adjacent to our office. This, of course, knocked out the power to our block. Our battery backups lasted about 45 minutes then our dialup lines went down.
About 25 minutes after that our generators arrived and were set up all our systems were back up. We are now on generators and will be until the power is completely restored.
We appologize for the the 25 minute downtime.

Pac Bell has made a major mistake in installing our new lines. They have killed 48 channels, this is why you were recieving busy signals. I am currently working with them to try and resolve the problems asap.

We are currently testing a very aggressive anti-spam filter. It is working well. We have logged over 8000 spam rejections per day (thats about 40% of messages delivered). So you have probably noticed a reduction in spam mail.

If you recieve a spam message please forward it to us and we will try to add it to the spam filter.

Pac Bell has completed their work and it looks like everything is working properly. The new lines are up so their should be no more peak period busy signals. We are now up to 212 lines.

Grapevine will start offering DSL service starting October 18, 1999. We are completing the construction of our DSL network.

We had a minor problem with our authentication servers today between 430pm and 500pm. If you tried to connect between that time you may not have been able to. The problem was resolved by 500pm.
On Friday and/or Saturday our web server will be down for a few hours to replace the Hard Drives. This is preventative maintenance. You will not have any problems getting to the Internet but our web page will look different while we do the work.

Our mail server is having problems once again. It crashed at around 12pm today. We are currently working to get it back online as soon as possible. Again, we apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

The mail server is back online. We had to reinstall the operating system and everything seems to be working properly now. Thank you for your patience. Also, we will be taking the web server offline sometime between 12pm and 5pm tomorrow 2/20 for regular maintenance.

The POP3 mail server is currently down. The server's operating system crashed at around 1pm today. We are working on the problem and will have it up as soon as possible, we apologize for any inconviences.

The New 24 lines are here!
It is now 7:04pm Wednesday night and Pac Bell has completed the installation of our additional 24 lines. It looks like everything is configured correctly. BUT, if you experience any busy signals please send us an email or call the office. When reporting be sure to note the time and the number your computer dials into.

The Pac Bell workers have been working for the last 2 days to complete the installation of our 24 new lines. At the end of business today they are not yet complete, but they have told us that the lines should be up in the AM tomarrow (Thursday 2/18/99).

The Pac Bell workers are busy adding our 24 new lines. They told me that they have run into some problems and that the lines will probably be up tomorrow morning (Wednesday 02-17-99.)

Pac Bell is scheduled to install the new 24 lines today. Although there should be no interruption of service there is always a possibility. We will post here when the work is completed.
